Early Summer 2023 Workshops

Howdy folks—I’m excited for the warm weather & collaborating with nature and y’all at these upcoming workshops. I’ve got two I’m excited to highlight here:

Cyanotype workshop at the LivLab in downtown Sylva, NC.

A Sense of Place: Cyanotype Intensive Workshop at the Bascom Visual Arts Center in Highlands, NC June 8-9th

I’m very excited for this upcoming workshop at the Bascom—it’s a magical art center in the picturesque town of Highlands, NC. Over this two day workshop we’ll be introduced to the cyanotype process from mixing chemistry, coating paper and dialing in exposure times to more advanced techniques like digital negatives and toning. Inspired by the writings and practice of William Bartram, throughout the entire process we’ll consider how we can make work with and about nature, incorporate sustainable practices, and include the right amount of random chance to mix things up. Site-Specific Cyanotype Workshop at Asheville Print Studio, June 15th

If a two-day workshop is a bit much, this one-day workshop will be sure to inspire creativity in a smaller time commitment. We’ll be working in the beautiful Asheville Print Studio in the historic River Arts District of Asheville, NC. This workshop will serve as an introduction to the cyanotype process and we’ll make work that incorporates inspiration from our surrounding environment. From the graffiti covered warehouses to the banks of the French Broad, we’ll have plenty of content to work with! This is a great workshop even if you’ve never worked with the cyanotype process before. And because we’ll be working at a print studio, we’ll pay special attention to the possibilities of incorporating our work with other printing processes. Canie Creek Community College officially launches

My backyard dome educational initiative is off the ground & running! I’m currently teaching Site-Specific Cyanotype workshops that introduce the cyanotype process in a sustainable and ecologically curious manner. These workshops are all in-person and happen right in my backyard—one of the oldest neighborhoods in Asheville and along Canie Creek, a tributary of the French Broad River. Work from "Standard Stars" featured in HAF's latest exhibition

Curators Roula Seikaly and Jon Feinstein did a bang-up job of assembling some amazing work featuring the sun & the moon in Humble Art Foundation’s latest exhibition titled Under the Sun and the Moon. I’m excited to share some some never-before-shown work from my “Standard Stars” series and very fortunate to be included amongst the other artists in this group exhibition. Thanks HAF! A Light Year of Lead pre-orders now available!

My new book A Light Year of Lead is now available for pre-order on my web-store. I’m very excited for this book to be out in the world—it’s been a long time coming! The book is nearly 200 pages, has almost 90 photographs, and has several paper stocks, gatefolds, and other special bits that make it feel like the hybrid photo book/artist’s book that I was truly after. The book was designed by the amazing Sara Fowler and I was fortunate to have the talented transmedia poet Amy Catanzano contribute some original typographic poetry to the project. A Light Year of Lead is an investigation into how contemporary science pictures the invisible & unknown. Eric William Carroll has photographed throughout the United States in former mines where scientists have installed experiments attempting to detect elusive elementary particles and theoretical dark matter. Rather than demystify the experiments, Carroll amplifies their strangeness through seven distinct chapters. In collaboration with Carroll’s on-site photographs and studio experimentations, Amy Catanzano presents a series of typographical poems that span the scientific and mythopoetic to the surreal and absurd. An expanded laboratory experiment between art, science and literature, the collaboration between Carroll and Catanzano blurs established boundaries between the known & unknown, as well as image & text. A Light Year of Lead to be published

Thanks to the fine folks at the Minnesota State Arts Board & their Artist Initiative Grant, my project "A Light Year of Lead" will be published this year. The nearly 200-page photobook explores the everyday absurdity and bizarre aesthetics surrounding the scientific experiments that are attempting to detect elementary particles and dark matter. More details will be announced later in the spring.

A Light Year of Lead at Bethel University

Artist Performance: Friday, September 27th at 7PM in The Underground, Brushaber Commons, 2nd level. Reception with the artist in the Johnson Gallery following the performance.

For the past five years, Carroll has traveled to underground laboratories and astronomical observatories in order to find out exactly what we don’t know. In “A Light Year of Lead”, Carroll presents his findings through large scale color photographs, video, and installation. Pivoting away from scientific facts and clarity, Carroll focuses his lens on mystery, magic, and absurdity while simultaneously working as a documentary photographer. The resulting work oscillates between scientific objectivity and human subjectivity, the massive and the massless, extraordinarily sophisticated experiments and dumb luck, leaving the viewer in a state of wonder, confusion, and curiosity.

The Psychokinesis Test in Seeing Science

I’m thrilled to be included in the new Aperture publication Seeing Science: How Photography Reveals the Universe, edited by the wonderful Marvin Heiferman.
