Selected Methods of Archiving

For this piece, I invented a photographic process
that was destined to fail.
The ‘Carrolltype’ (patent-pending)
consists of heavy, iron-rich plates reclaimed from sunken ships.
The plates are polished, sensitized, exposed, and processed
only to deteriorate within 6-12 months. I used the Carrolltype
process to document various other processes we use to store
images and sound. My aim is to make plainly clear that the
external vessels we use to contain our memories are
just as ephemeral as the memories themselves.
